Top 5 Film Directors
I should note that these are my (Jared’s) top 5, and that we’ll probably do another list with Luca and Evan’s.
1. David Fincher
David Fincher (Benjamin Button, Fight Club, Social Network) gets the number one spot on my list because of his insane versatility and awesome style. Fincher is a master storyteller, and has an incredible ability to connect with actors, as well as an ability to utilize visual effects to tell his stories. (He also only shoots on digital formats!) The only other common denominator tying Fincher’s work together is that everything he does is really long… But I guess that makes it all the more fun!
2. J.J. Abrams
Okay, maybe Abram’s work (Star Trek, Lost, Super 8 ) isn’t what you’d consider “high art,” but everything he does is extremely entertaining to say the least. J.J. Abrams has the ability to solve problems in the most creative and simple ways, which save time and money on set. You can watch him talk about his “Mystery Box” here.
3. Peter Jackson
Like Fincher, Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, The Lovely Bones) has the ability to utilize his directorial skills with actors but also his insane knowledge of visual effects. Jackson founded Weta Digital to start work on the Lord of the Rings, which is now a premiere VFX house that has done huge amounts of work on such movies as District 9 and Avatar.
4. Christopher Nolan
Nolan’s (Momento, Dark Knight, Inception) huge visionary talent has too made his films some of the most popular in cinema history. (Though it should be noted that not everything Nolan does is big and flashy). Nolan is a huge stickler for realism, and tries whenever possible to do things in camera and practically. Like Fincher and Jackson, most of Nolan’s work runs really long.
5. M. Night Shyamalan mk 1.
M. Night Shyamalan mk 1. (Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village) not to be confused with M. Night Shyamalan mk2.(Lady in the Water, The Happening) has to take number five on the list by virtue that his work is so iconic. Before he became a sellout, Shyamalan’s stories were incredibly gripping, his films beautifully shot and awesome. Things may have changed, but as long as they do re-release his early work, Shyamalan mk 1. has to be on my top five list.
Let us know who your favorite directors are down below!

its a shame that your taste is limited to director’s exclusive to this era. Probably on Jackson would even remotely be considered among the top 5 greatest director’s of all time, behind the all time greats:
1. Alfred Hitchcock
2. Stanley Kubrick
3. Federico Fellini
4. Steven Spielberg
5. Martin Scorsese/Kurosawa/Copolla (hard to decide).
and my all time favourites, by personal choice not common belief:
1. Sergio Leone
2. Quentin Tarantino
3. Stanley Kubrick
4. Robert Zemeckis
5. Spike Lee
It’s A Good List, Though It Seems You’re More Into The Mainstream Directors.
My Personal All-Time Favorite Directors Are:

4. Jean-Luc Godard
3. Paul Thomas Anderson
2. Afonso Cuaron
1. Wong Kar Wai
But Hey, Everyone Has Different Tastes Right.
I should probably note that this isn’t supposed to be a best directors list of all time. These are my favorite directors who are currently alive and producing work.
Yes, anyone could argue differently, but I’m judging these directors on their consistency and their ability to create something engaging.
